The Darkness That Comes After

Believe in me and I will give you eternal Salvation, said the Lord. “Can I have Might or Kings instead?” asked the tank.

Why Terry Goodkind Sucks (Part One)

Posted by senseichow on August 25, 2006

I actually enjoyed my first read of Wizard’s First Rule. I really did. Sure the two hundred odd pages near the end of the book where it turns into an S&M manual did raise my eyebrow, but I managed to look past that. I’m a forgiving sort of guy. Then I read Stone of Tears and I thought, wow, the guy’s stolen a lot from Jordan but what the hell, its still a damn good read. And there’s practically no S&M! Blood of the Fold continued the tradition of good solid reads, but from there it all started to go downhill.

Temple of the Winds left me with a….. certain feeling of ‘meh’. The same old characters were there, the same kind of stuff was happening, but not in the way we were used to. It seemed like while the big stuff was going on in the book, there were even bigger background shifts in the way Goodkind was trying to write the story. And the bit at the end where Kahlan cheats on Richard and he ends up asking for her forgiveness….. wtf?

Then came Faith of the Fallen. Whoo boy! Sometime between books 4 and 5 (or maybe even between 3 and 4), Goodkind went and discovered Ayn Rand.

Wireless Revolution

Posted by senseichow on August 23, 2006

Somehow ended up buying both an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mouse to go with my Macbook Pro. Just trying them out, and I gotta say, they’re both great. Both work through Bluetooth unlike the crappy Microsoft Wireless Mouse I had before, the keyboard feels really smooth to type on, and the Mouse is extremely responsive.

Damn you Apple! When will you stop making quality must buy products so I can finally start saving up some money!!

Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children

Posted by senseichow on August 22, 2006

So I’ve never been a big fan of the Final Fantasy games. Been a PC RPG’er most of my adult life and never saw the need to delve into the murky depths of console RPGs.

So its fair to say I rented thFinal Fantasy 7 Advent Childrenis movie from Amazon without really expecting much. Boy was I wrong!

The plot, from what I now know, is pretty heavily based on Final Fantasy 7, so if you’ve never played the game you may be a little lost at first. However, as every true geek knows, its not the plot that matters, its the special effects.

And they don’t disappoint.

The fight in the forest, the battle in the city against Bahamust Sin (a big dragon type thing) and the final showdown with archbaddie Sephiroth – all breathtaking. The fight scenes really give you a sense of the power of the people involved, and the sheer scale of it is amazing. There’s one particular bit where Cloud Strife (the main hero guy) jumps straight into the sky, and his old buddies from FF7 (who turned up especially for the fight, keep throwing him ever upwards – extremely cool. Extremely.

If you’re a fan of the games, or if you have even a passing interest in anime, or if you’re just a good old fashioned nerd, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.

PC Gaming on a Mac!

Posted by senseichow on August 22, 2006

Parallels and full speed gaming

This has been well digg’d already, but is worth checking out. If you really could run the latest, tastiest PC games on a Mac, at native/near native speeds, without ever having to leave the comfort of your own OS X………

There’s really no reason to deny yourself one of the sweet sweet Mac Pros.

I’ll be watching this one with interest.

Welcome

Posted by senseichow on August 22, 2006

A big welcome to everyone. This is my first attempt at a blog so bear (ha ha ha ha ha…. get it?…… no?…… really?….. did you look at the photo?….) with me. Its going to be a small scale blog about stuff that interests me, mainly sci-fi and fantasy books, PC gaming, and the latest PC and Mac developments. I may also write about a few medical things (I’m a doctor in the UK) but I’ll try to keep that to a minimum.

So if you’re not a fantasy geek, then you should probably leave already. 🙂
